Brace Yourselves: Health Insurance Costs in 2024 Might Just Break the Bank

Just when you thought open enrollment was tough, hold onto your wallets because things are about to get even tougher for those with private health insurance. Especially if you’re getting your coverage through the good ol’ workplace, be prepared—you might just feel the pinch (and I’m not talking about your nosy cubicle neighbor).

Why So Pricey, Insider?

So here’s the scoop: consultancies like Mercer and Willis Towers Watson (WTW) are painting a grim picture for 2024 with expected cost increases for employer-provided health plans possibly leaping over 6%. Yep, you heard that right. That’s the biggest jump we’ve seen in a decade, following an already steep 7% increase in 2023 according to the folks at Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). So much for small increments, huh?

Mercer throws in a bit more doom and gloom, suggesting that if businesses keep their health plans unchanged, expenses could soar by 6.6%. There’s a silver lining though—implement some savvy cost-cutting strategies and that number might shrink to 5.4%. WTW echoes this sentiment, predicting a rise between 6% to 6.4%. With costs historically inching up by a gentler 3% to 4% annually, this year’s forecast feels like a financial gut punch.

The Inflation Boomerang

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, inflation has finally caught up with private health insurance. Despite the Labor Department watching health insurance costs dive by a surprising 27% over the past year, those sneaky expenses for meds and other services kept climbing. Who’s to blame? Well, those long-term deals between hospitals and insurers don’t renew very often, leaving costs to play catch-up all at once. And boy, are they catching up now!

A November tidbit from WTW tells us to brace for a 9% spike in medical costs in the U.S. this year. Thanks to everyone skipping their doctor visits during the pandemic, some flashy new drug prices, and, let’s throw in a bit of overtreatment for good measure. When it rains, it pours, right?

What’s Next for Your Wallet in 2024?

Given the backdrop of mind-boggling inflation across numerous sectors, a predicted health insurance increase of around 6.5% might not seem like the worst news ever. But, let’s put that into perspective—according to KFF, we’re talking an annual hit of about $8,500 for singleton coverage or a whopping $24,000 for family plans. In real money, that’s roughly $550 more for individuals and $1,500 extra for families each year—ouch!

Thankfully, we’re not in this alone. These costs are usually a duet sung by employers and employees. How much of this duet you’ll sing can depend on how generous or (ahem) cost-conscious your employer feels, and often, the size of the company. Smaller firms are like the tough love parents of the corporate world, often handing their employees a heftier part of the bill. Last time we checked, employers covered about 83% of the premium for solo flyers and 71% for the family crew.

Of course, things like which industry you’re in, where you live, and the type of plan you choose also jazz up the final figure. One thing’s for sure, if you’ve got private health insurance, your bank account might feel a bit lighter next year.
